What is the best primer for dark oily skin? Should you invest in purchasing expensive or stick to cheap beauty products? These are just a few beauty questions I am bombarded with on a regular basis by models, brides, students and beauty enthusiasts. With over 15 years in the beauty industry, many trials and errors, I have discovered many great products suited for a myriad of skin tones, ranging from high end to drugstore price.
Here are some of my recommendations, but feel free to post your comments at the bottom of the article. It would be interesting to start a discussion because there are tons of many products on the market which I am eager to try.
Q. What are the best primers for dark skin?
Primers are as important as taking off your makeup before going to bed. Women of color tend to have super oily skin, therefore it is essential to choose a primer that controls oils, complement your skin tone and give a flawless finish. The benefits of primers are as follows: control oils; make dull skin come alive; minimise pores; even out skin imperfections; create a smooth base for you to apply foundation to. Whatever your need – color correction, oil control, dull skin – there is a primer that will complement your complexion.
For photo shoots, you’ll want to try Kryolan HD primer; my favorite thus far. This HD formula goes on smoothly, provides the perfect base for your foundation and last up to 24 hours.
For everday use, those looking for a flawless, even complexion, Ghosh primer is excellent. I first discovered this product a couple months ago at Duane Reade drugstore, NYC. It`s a Dannish brand and quite affordable. I tested it on my students during my Bootcamp Training, Trinidad and Tobago in February 2015 and was quite pleased with the results. The formula worked well on oily skins, at the same time the skin looked natural with a fresh summer glow, all day long.
Another great product for a flawless complexion, try Black up Perfect Mattifying Primer. The highly effective formula works well on dark skin tones to get rid of extreme shine, acne pimples and dark spots and contain active antiageing ingredients such as plant extracts and and hyaluronic acid.
If you’re on a tight budget, your best drugstore option is Neutrogena, which is fantastic. So there you have it, I truly believe good primer is the one item you should splurge on. It`s the groundwork for flawless makeup.
Extra tip: For quick, hygienic and flawless application of primers, try Zalina Wälchli – 112 Duo Fibre Stippler Brush, cost $30
